The Service

Smooth, paint-ready walls and ceilings

Skimming is a thin finishing coat of plaster applied over an existing surface or fresh plasterboard. It flattens out ripples, hairline cracks, old wallpaper scars and patchy repairs, leaving one continuous surface with no shadows under the light.

Most people call us after stripping wallpaper, knocking two rooms into one, or when a tired 1930s ceiling has started to craze. We also skim whole houses for landlords and developers between tenancies and at the end of a build.

A skim is only as good as the preparation. Blown or hollow areas get cut back and made good first, edges and beads are set properly, and the finish is trowelled up in stages so it dries flat rather than pulling away at the corners.

  • Smooth, consistent finish across the whole surface
  • Walls, ceilings, single rooms or whole houses
  • Ready for decorating once fully dry
  • Dust sheets down, edges protected, site left clean

How We Work

How Our Wall & Ceiling Plastering Process Works

Four straightforward stages, from the first phone call to the moment we hand the room back to you.

01

Discuss Your Requirements

Tell us the rooms involved, rough sizes and the condition of the existing walls or ceilings. Photos help. We give you a clear written price, usually within a day.

02

Assess & Prepare

We check for hollow or blown plaster, damp and loose paint, then sheet up, mask edges, fit beads where needed and PVA or grit-prime the surface so the skim bonds properly.

03

Skim the Surface

Two coats of finish plaster applied wet-on-wet, then trowelled up in stages as it firms so walls and ceilings dry flat, with crisp internal and external angles.

04

Final Check & Clean Up

We light-check the finish for shadows, take away waste and sheeting, and explain drying times and when to mist-coat before you decorate.

FAQs

Wall & ceiling plastering questions

What people ask us most before booking a skim. If yours is not here, call and ask — we are happy to talk the job through first.

01202 125594
How much does wall and ceiling plastering cost in Bournemouth?

We price per wall and per ceiling rather than by the hour. As a guide, a standard bedroom ceiling skim starts around £200 and a small bedroom skimmed throughout around £450. Condition, access and ceiling height all affect it, so we quote in writing after seeing the room or clear photos.

How long does fresh plaster take to dry?

Usually three to seven days for a skim, longer on solid walls, in winter or in rooms with little ventilation. It goes from dark brown to a uniform pale pink when it is dry all the way through.

When can I paint newly plastered walls?

Once the plaster is evenly pale and dry, start with a mist coat of emulsion watered down roughly 70:30, then two full coats. Painting too early seals moisture in and causes flaking.

Can you skim over existing plaster?

Yes, provided the existing plaster is sound and well bonded. We tap the walls first and cut out anything hollow or blown, then prime so the new skim grips properly.

Do you plaster both walls and ceilings?

Both, and usually together. Doing the ceiling first and then the walls gives clean angles and avoids marking a finished surface.

Do I need to move furniture before you start?

Clear the room of anything you can move, and take down curtains and light fittings if possible. Anything heavy can stay in the middle of the room — we sheet it up and protect the floor before we mix.

How long does it take to plaster a room?

A single ceiling is often a day. An average bedroom skimmed throughout is one to two days, and a whole house is normally a week to ten days depending on size and preparation.

Which areas around Bournemouth do you cover?

Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wimborne, Ringwood, Verwood, New Milton and the surrounding villages. Call if you are slightly further out.
