The Service

Repairs that do not show through the paint

Most plaster fails for a reason. Hairline cracks follow the joints in old plasterboard, patches go hollow where the bond has let go, and older walls in Boscombe and Westbourne often have plaster that has simply reached the end of its life. A dab of filler hides it for a month. A proper repair lasts.

We start by tapping the wall to find where the plaster is still sound. Anything hollow or crumbling is cut back to a firm edge, gaps are built out with backing plaster, and then the whole wall or ceiling is re-skimmed so the old and new surfaces read as one.

If a patch repair will do, we will say so. Where the damage is spread across a wall, a full re-skim is usually the better value, because patching around patches never quite sits flat.

  • Cracks, blown patches and old repairs cut out properly
  • Socket chases, radiator scars and doorway infills made good
  • Single patches or whole-wall re-skims
  • Flat, consistent finish ready for decorating

How We Work

How Our Re-skimming & Repair Process Works

A repair is only as good as the plaster around it, so most of our time goes into finding the edge of the damage before any new plaster goes on.

01

Show Us the Damage

Send photos of the cracks or patches, or we come out and look. You get a written price that says whether we are patching or re-skimming, and why.

02

Find the Sound Edge

We tap and test the surface, cut out anything hollow or loose, rake out cracks and fix any loose board back to the joists or studs before we fill.

03

Build Up & Re-skim

Deep areas are built up with backing plaster, cracks are bridged with scrim tape, and a two-coat skim is laid over the whole area so it finishes flush.

04

Check It in the Light

We run a light across the finished surface to catch any shadow, clear away the waste and tell you when it is safe to mist-coat.

FAQs

Re-skimming & plaster repair questions

The questions we hear most on repair jobs. If your wall is doing something odd, send us a photo and ask.

01202 125594
How much do plaster repairs cost in Bournemouth?

It depends on the size of the damage and whether a patch or a full re-skim is the right fix. Repairs are priced as a job rather than by the hour, and there is a minimum half-day charge, so it often makes sense to group small repairs together. Quotes are free and in writing, usually back within 48 hours.

Should I patch the damage or re-skim the whole wall?

A small, isolated patch can be repaired on its own. Where there are several patches, cracks running across the wall or an old repair that has started to show, a full re-skim usually costs little more and gives a far better finish.

Why does my plaster keep cracking?

Common causes are unfixed plasterboard joints, movement around doors and windows, and plaster that has lost its bond with the wall. We find the cause first, so the same crack does not come back through the new finish.

What is blown or hollow plaster?

It is plaster that has come away from the wall behind it. It sounds hollow when tapped and often bulges or cracks. It has to be cut out and replaced, because skimming over it only traps the problem.

Can you repair plaster after damp?

Yes, once the cause of the damp has been dealt with. Damp-damaged plaster is hacked off, the wall is treated and allowed to dry, and it is then re-plastered and skimmed.

Will the repair be visible once it is painted?

It should not be. We skim beyond the edge of the repair and light-check the finish before we leave, so the patch and the surrounding wall take paint the same way.

Do you take on small repair jobs?

We do. A filled-in doorway, the scar where a radiator came off or a run of chased-in cables are all everyday work for us. Because of the minimum half-day charge, send a list of everything that needs doing and we will price it as one visit.

Do you do plaster repairs outside Bournemouth?

Yes. We repair and re-skim across Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wimborne, Ringwood, Verwood and New Milton as well as every part of Bournemouth. If you are just beyond those, ring and ask.
